Novo Nordisk CEO Mike Doustdar (Ozempic + Wegovy) laments that only 15 million Americans are taking GLP-1s.
He thinks 85 million MORE should be taking them.
He frames it as a tragedy, an “unmet need,” and says we should pay more attention to the 85 million who aren’t on the drugs. As if they need our sympathy.
MIKE DOUSTDAR: “I mentioned 15 million people or so are on GLP-1 in this market.”
“There are 100 million people with obesity in US.”
“Very few people talk about, what about the other 85 million?”
Remember when GLP-1s were only for diabetics? Then they got pitched as a last resort for obese people who couldn't lose weight any other way?
Now Doustdar looks at every fat American and sees dollar signs.
That tells you everything you need to know about the GLP-1 push. Someone who loses weight the old fashioned way is a customer lost. They would rather you keep eating junk and buy the drug.
And once you’re on it, you’re a customer for life.
Novo’s own study found people gained back TWO-THIRDS of the weight within a year of stopping.
It’s the perfect business model.
A drug for life. A third of the country on it. Only works as long as you keep taking it.
Last year, Novo Nordisk pulled in roughly $47,000,000,000 in sales. That’s not good enough. They want more.
