International Day of Libraries is celebrated on October 24th in some countries, such as Spain and Germany. The event brings attention to the thousands of public libraries and encourages citizens to take advantage of their wonderful contributions to society. The date coincides with when a German librarian named Karl Benjamin Preusker established the first public library in Germany in 1828. As for Spain, Library Day was a 1997 initiative from the Spanish Association of Friends of the Children and Young Adults Book in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture. It commemorates the destruction of the Sarajevo National Library, which was set on fire in 1992 during the Balcans War.
