During a wave of deceitful recruitment, North Korean hackers employed AI face-swapping in fake interviews. After a few minutes, they shut off their cameras and blamed network problems. A multinational advisory from Japan, the US, Australia, and Germany traced the scheme to WaterPlum, or Contagious Interview, which infected about 30,000 devices across more than 100 countries between December 2025 and July 2026. The group planted malware through bogus coding tests, stole funds or credentials from more than 7,000 crypto wallets, and funneled roughly ¥1.7 billion ($10.7 million) back to North Korea.
