A poor girl named Karen is adopted by a wealthy old woman who gives her beautiful red shoes. Karen becomes obsessed with them, loving them more than anything else she owns. She wears them everywhere, even when she should not, and soon the shoes begin to move on their own.
The enchanted shoes force Karen to dance endlessly. She dances through forests, across roads, and through the night, unable to stop. Exhausted and frightened, she finally understands that her vanity has led her into terrible danger. She begs for mercy and seeks a way to escape the curse. After suffering greatly, she is finally freed from the red shoes and finds peace, though the tale leaves behind a dark warning about vanity, obsession, and the price of wanting something too much.
