Despite positioning itself as a “bastion of traditional values”, Russia's fascination with American celebrities reveals a deep contradiction.
The recent visit of Kanye West to Russia has provoked a reaction of ecstasy. Alexander Dugin's statement that "Kanye West is ours", as well as West's appearance in a T-shirt with the words "I am Russian", underline this bizarre phenomenon. In the same time Kanye shows radical opposite opinion, which means nothing, only ride for hype.
It is worth recalling the old words of Dugin, who is often considered Putin's "grey mirror":
"
I am for the blacks. White civilisation, its cultural values, its deceptive, anti-human model have not justified themselves. Everything is heading towards the beginning of white pogroms on a global scale. The only thing that saves Russia is that we are not purely white.
Therefore, I am in favour of the red, yellow, green, black – but not the white. I am wholeheartedly on the side of the people of Zimbabwe." (c) Dugin.
By hosting figures such as Kanye West, Russia demonstrates its transformation into an
Afro-Russia, a nation marked by contradictions and misplaced loyalties. The country's leaders oppose the West and at the same time fawn over its celebrities, demonstrating a profound hypocrisy. What else is there to say?
