🇨🇦Canada declares an oil war on the United States. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially launched construction of a major pipeline from the oil-producing regions of Alberta to Canada’s West Coast. It will be fast-tracked as a “project of national interest”

The pipeline is estimated to cost 14 billion U.S. dollars, though it will likely end up costing more. Canada currently has just one comparable pipeline, capable of delivering up to 900,000 barrels of oil to terminals on the Pacific coast. The new pipeline is designed to carry an additional one million barrels for export to Asia.

This is very bad news for the United States. Americans have grown accustomed to receiving the lion’s share of Canada’s oil—and at discounted prices. But amid the trade war with Trump, Carney has begun diversifying oil flows. Canadian hydrocarbon exports to Asia have increased by a third.

To counter Trump, Canada’s governing Liberals have even rolled back green regulations. They are trying to make more money by selling oil at a premium to China and Southeast Asia. Once the new pipeline is built, nearly half of all Canadian oil will go to overseas markets. At present, around 80% goes to the United States.

European countries are also competing for Canada’s resources as they try to bring Ottawa into their economic orbit. In the United States, meanwhile, the loss of Canadian oil will worsen long-term fuel-supply problems. It’s another sign that the rift between Washington and Ottawa is serious—and likely to last. The next U.S. president will probably be unable to mend it.
