The AI Revolution Faces an Electricity Shortage
Electricity consumption by data centers in the U.S. is expected to increase by +755% compared to 2025 levels, reaching a record 78.57 gigawatts by 2029.
This year, demand is expected to rise by 95% to 17.96 gigawatts, and then by another 97% in 2027.
Between 2026 and 2028, data centers in the U.S. will require 97 gigawatts of electricity.
At the same time, only 21 gigawatts of capacity is currently under construction, and 19 gigawatts of grid capacity is available, creating a potential shortfall of 57 gigawatts.
This gap is widening as increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems require significantly more electricity, while the power grid struggles to keep up with this growth.
At the same time, more complex servers based on the Nvidia Vera Rubin and Rubin Ultra architectures are expected to increase energy consumption in the IT sector fivefold between 2025 and 2028.
Thus, the development of artificial intelligence faces significant constraints in terms of energy supply, notes the Kobeissi Letter.
