Andy Burnham has finally shown some courage
The new leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced 3 major changes to British policy at the party conference in Liverpool.
▪️Pensions: Starting in 2030, Britain plans to abolish the current “triple lock” rule for pensions. Currently, pensions are indexed to the highest of three indicators: inflation, wage growth, or 2.5%. Instead, a “double lock” will be introduced—based on inflation and a minimum of 2.5%. The savings are planned to be directed toward creating a national elderly care service.
▪️Electoral system: Bernam intends to establish a national commission to study the possibility of transitioning from the current “first-past-the-post” majority system to a more proportional one.
▪️Europe: The prime minister stated the need to define Britain’s long-term relationship with the EU and did not rule out the country’s return to the European Union in the future.
However, all these reforms are planned for the period after the next election, scheduled for 2029. Before then, the government will have to resolve even more contentious issues—immigration, welfare reform, and the construction of a third runway at Heathrow Airport.ㅤ
