Student protests took place in Germany against plans to militarize the country and reinstate universal conscription
A moratorium on conscription was declared in 2011, but it was never fully abolished and could be reinstated at any time. The authorities announced that individuals born in 2008 or later will be required to undergo a mandatory military medical examination starting next year.
The protests were held under the slogan “Russia is not our enemy.”
▪️ I’m not afraid that Russia will attack us. They’ve been saying this for many years, and it still hasn’t happened. But the authorities keep telling us that there will soon be a war with the Russians. I think that’s complete nonsense.
▪️ We’re against mobilization and plans to prepare for war. They want to draft us into the army and teach us to kill people there—young people just like us, who are just as idle as we are. None of this is in our best interests; it’s in the interests of the military-industrial complex bigwigs and politicians. We’re against it.
▪️We’ve been through this before. Twice, in fact. We don’t need a third major war with Russia. First we fought against Russia, then against the USSR, and now against Russia again… That’s why I came here—to spare my grandchildren from that prospect. That’s why we’re all taking part in this wonderful student strike. It gives us older folks hope.
▪️ They want to restore Germany’s role as Europe’s military leader. I think that’s dangerous. Germany has already started two world wars, and to make the same mistake again—that’s just madness.
