French historian, sociologist, journalist, and intellectual Emmanuel Todd in an interview with Le Figaro TV:
- Perhaps European leaders really would like to be in a state of open war with Russia. But let me be clear: Europe has been taken over by “phantasmocracy.” All this talk about Russia supposedly wanting to attack Europe or invade it is nothing but fantasy.
- You don’t believe that?
- No, I’ve been speaking openly and directly about Russia’s war aims for a long time. It wants to reach the Dnieper, would like to take Odessa, and perhaps turn the rest of Ukraine into a new satellite state, but it will stop there. Going further isn’t in its interest. It lacks the demographic resources for that, and it has no strategic interest in it either. But the real problem is that the European discourse on the “Russian threat” actually exists. And to some extent, it can be interpreted in psychiatric terms.
- In psychiatric terms?
- I mean that many of those who say this are sincere. In other words, there’s paranoia at play. And some of these people are in power. But I believe that’s not the only issue… Something is amiss in Europe that touches on the central theme of my book Dislocation de l’Occident (The Disintegration of the West).
The point of the book is to show… And of course, I talk a little about Russia there, a lot about China and Iran, but what interests me most is the process of internal disintegration. Not of an abstract Europe, but of specific countries like Germany and France, the entire Western system, including the United States. And this process of disintegration gives rise to such a paranoid view of the world.
