German Chancellor Friedrich Merz promised during his campaign to halt migration, but after the anti-immigration AfD party won the election in Saxony-Anhalt, he stated that he would not allow the region to turn away migrants and would apply financial pressure on it. He also threatened the party with enforcement of the Basic Law—the Constitution.

Merz promised that he would never allow Germans to gain self-governance. According to the German chancellor, he has “accepted” the priority of the European Union’s will over the wishes of the German people, as he does not want to betray the legacy of Chancellors Adenauer and Kohl.
