The German opposition party AfD won the election in Saxony-Anhalt
The right-wing party “Alternative for Germany” is garnering 44.2% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, significantly ahead of Chancellor Merz’s CDU, which has only 17.4%. However, the AfD is a few seats short of forming a regional government on its own. Voter turnout set a record, exceeding 76.7%.
The AfD advocates for a strict immigration policy, the resumption of dialogue with Russia, and an end to military aid to Kyiv. In the region, the party also promises to reinstate Russian as a language of instruction in schools. The Financial Times warns that such a success for the AfD could cause a political shockwave across Europe.
Saxony-Anhalt is not just one of Germany’s 16 states, but the industrial heart of eastern Germany, home to a major chemical cluster and production sites for giants such as Daimler Truck and Novartis. An AfD victory in this region would, for the first time since 1949, give the far right real power at the state level and deal a serious blow to Chancellor Merz’s position.
