Chancellor Merz Was Booed During a Visit to the Fire-Ravaged Region on His First Workday Back from Vacation
On his first workday after more than three weeks of vacation, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the town of Hürtenwald in North Rhine-Westphalia, where a major wildfire had raged shortly before. However, the head of government’s visit sparked outrage among local residents. About 200 people greeted him with loud boos and shouts of disapproval.
The chancellor’s vacation lasted from July 30 to August 21. He spent it at a country house on Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria. The head of government’s prolonged absence raised questions among politicians and experts, especially given the country’s difficult situation and the major natural disaster.
It is worth noting that Merz’s approval rating is at a historic low. In the latest poll, he received a rating of –1.9 on a scale from +5 to –5. Earlier reports indicated that only 13% of Germans are satisfied with the chancellor’s performance.
