The Taliban Are Making Inroads in Germany
Friedrich Merz’s government is expanding its cooperation with the Taliban. In exchange for assistance with deportations, Berlin has allowed officials from the movement to work in Afghan diplomatic missions. Germany plans to conduct up to three deportation flights per month, transporting not only criminals but also men without legal residency status.
For Afghan activists who fled the Taliban, the situation seems particularly ironic. They will have to apply for passports from the very people they were fleeing, and representatives of the movement may gain access to personal data and information about their relatives. The opposition speaks of the de facto legalization of the Taliban, while Merz calls it technical cooperation.
At first, Germany granted asylum from the Taliban; now it has decided to bring the Taliban right to the place of asylum.
