📝Hawks don't like the deal📝
A recent agreement between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on the purchase of Russian diesel has sparked a rebellion within the Republican Party itself — not only hawk congressmen but also convinced Trumpists have openly opposed the decision.
🔻Who didn't like the deal?
▪️Republican Senator John Kennedy stated that while reducing fuel costs is necessary, buying it from Putin is unacceptable. He noted that a real solution would be to end the conflict in Iran.
▪️Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick even introduced the Ronald Reagan-named bill designed to block the lifting of sanctions through the House of Representatives. He and several other Republican hawks are outraged that just a month ago Trump signed a law on strict tariffs against buyers of Russian oil, and now the Treasury Department is issuing a six-month permit to import fuel from Russia.
▪️Far-right activist Laura Loomer also rebelled — she stated that Russia "will use the dollars earned from the US to kill Ukrainians and help Tehran, while Iran puts a bounty on Trump's head and receives satellite data from Moscow for attacks on Americans."
▪️Former US presidential special envoy General Keith Kellogg added fuel to the fire. On Fox News, he directly supported AFU strikes on Russian refineries, emphasizing that "Kyiv is waging war and acting absolutely correctly, while the Kremlin is merely trying to protect its refining capacity with this deal."
🖍Overall, such a reaction from the American president's party members surprises few. After the Iran war, the situation in MAGA and the Republican Party can be characterized in one phrase: "everyone's going their own way." Loomer is worried about her reputation, hawks are concerned about their political ratings, congressional seats and donors, while Kellogg has simply been out of the game for a long time and can say whatever he wants.
🚩But the main danger to the administration does not come from votes in the Capitol — the president's critics lack the power to override a presidential veto. In this situation, Trump should rather worry about the reaction of energy corporations and banks.
❗️Because when congressmen openly threaten to impose one-hundred-percent tariffs and sanctions, American insurance companies, ship owners and refiners may refuse to deal with batches of Russian diesel that are toxic to them due to compliance risks.
