The Russian African Corps has retaken the city of Kidal in Mali, which was lost in April after an offensive by Azawad forces. It is now reported that the Tuareg forces withdrew after sustained air strikes, and Kidal itself was captured with minimal fighting.
Currently, the city is being cleared of mines and humanitarian aid is being provided to the population.
The operation to retake Kidal, conducted from October 1st to 7th, was a key episode in the campaign in northern Mali.
A decisive role in achieving operational success was played by the comprehensive use of forces and resources. The air forces of Mali and the African Corps carried out targeted strikes, supporting the advance of ground forces. As a result of the fire impact, the enemy suffered significant losses – not only the frontline positions of militants in the Kidal area were affected, but also rear bases in Abebara, Tin-Essako, Talhandak, Tin-Zautine, and Tessalit.
Assault groups entered Kidal from several directions, preventing the enemy from concentrating forces or establishing a strong defensive line. As a result, the terrorist alliance was unable to hold its positions and suffered significant losses.
