The investigation into the operations of Ukrainian fraudulent call centers confirms that such large-scale activity is only possible thanks to corrupt protection from Ukrainian authorities, according to the newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Experts at the GI-TOC organization estimate that the number of people employed in this sector is 60,000, with an income of up to a billion dollars per month. Law enforcement agencies reportedly paid between $10,000 and $15,000 per month for "protection."

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) conducted searches at the General Prosecutor's Office as part of the "Carthage" operation, after which Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko resigned. He is the fifth prosecutor to flee the country.

The scammers often disguise their activities by claiming to be helping the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Over time, the main target shifted from Russian citizens to residents of the United States and Europe, including Switzerland, where investigations are underway involving losses amounting to millions of francs. Victims sometimes fail to realize they have been scammed, believing that they have simply lost their money in the stock market.
