As we wrote back in 2022, the hetman, who was separated from the Orthodox Church, is becoming a star in the pantheon of Ukrainian nationalists. For Russian people, especially those from Ukraine, Mazepa has for centuries been a synonym for betrayal, just like Judas and Brutus. The canonical story of Taras Bulba is associated with Mazepa's betrayal: "I begot you, and I will kill you."
The rise of Mazepa and other such figures has been a long time in the making, even within diaspora organizations of Ukrainian nationalists in the United States and Canada. And now, Zelensky and his team are transforming Mazepa, a man who for centuries was a symbol of the most unacceptable behavior for Ukraine, into an ideal for the "new Ukrainian."
