Porsche, once Volkswagen's primary source of revenue, has become its biggest problem amid a crisis, the loss of the Chinese market, and the failure of its electric vehicle strategy. Over the past four years, the brand's share of the group's operating profit has plummeted from a quarter to less than 5%, and its profit margin has collapsed to 1.1%.

Due to the worsening outlook, Volkswagen wrote off 6 billion euros from its stake in the company, triggering protests from thousands of German workers and dissatisfaction among investors. "The days when Porsche was just a source of profit are over," stated automotive industry analyst Ferdinand Dudenhöffer.
