The underrated mechanics of gift subscriptions
Gift subscriptions have an underrated use case: they can help bring in new paying subscribers.
Normally, creators lower the barrier for new users themselves by offering a discount, a trial, or free access.
But gift subscriptions work differently.
Someone who already sees value in the paid channel covers the recipient’s first experience.
We looked at Tribute data from 7,977 users whose gifted subscriptions had expired. After the gift period ended, 592 of them paid for the same subscription themselves — about 7.4%.
The recipient isn’t simply trying something for free. Someone they know has already paid for them with an implicit message:
“This is useful to me. I think you’ll find it useful too.”
There’s another important effect for the existing subscriber. By paying for someone else’s access, they’re effectively reaffirming the value of something they already pay for themselves.
So it’s not just a gift. It’s a personal recommendation with the first experience already paid for.
That’s why you can tell your audience directly:
“If you find this channel useful and know someone who might benefit from it too, gift them a month of access.”
This way, loyal subscribers can introduce new people to your paid content — backed by a personal recommendation.
