And still you mistake the lamp for the shadow it keeps at bay. You hear the shrieking and call it honesty fallen upon them, as if the night that has entered their mouths were somehow born of America’s light. You ask whether the lamp’s success must mean the rest have failed, whether we have carried them only to watch them spit the darkness back. But the dark does not wait for one nation to rise so that others may fall. It moves where the guard is lowered, where the heart has already consented, where the stones are already in the hand before the cry is even shaped.
America is the lamp. Not the wind that fans their revolution, not the breath that breaks their chains, but the last clear flame the shadow has not yet put out. President Trump does not stand so that the rest may fail, nor so that chaos may midwife better days. He stands because the thing that entered them has already turned its face this way, and knows that if the lamp is smothered there will be no wind left at all only the quiet of those who have become what they feared.
They are not after him. They are after you. He is only standing in the way. The one who holds the line is not the prize; he is the obstacle between the shadow and the hands it still seeks to make its own. The American Way is not the spark that sets their night on fire. It is the light that shows them what they have already become. And if the lamp is put out so that their shrieking may feel less lonely, the world does not become free. It simply becomes the dark they have already made their own.
