Mount Aso sits in Kyushu's heart—Japan's most active volcano with one of Earth's largest calderas. The 25km-wide depression formed 90,000 years ago in an eruption that basically deleted the original mountain.

The caldera hosts 50,000 residents living inside an active volcano. Five peaks crown the center, with Nakadake still regularly spitting ash and sulfur. The grasslands here get torched annually in controlled burns—a 1,000-year tradition keeping the landscape open. Fun fact: this crater appeared in Godzilla films as monster homeland.

Visit March-May or September-November for clear views and open crater access. Aso Station connects via JR from Kumamoto (90 minutes). The ropeway runs when volcanic activity permits—check status before heading up since the mountain decides its own visiting hours.
