Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) poses a neat puzzle: how do you finish a 13th‑century design with 19th‑century tech? Begun in 1248, stalled for 400+ years, completed in 1880—and for four years it was the tallest building on Earth.
Built to house the Shrine of the Three Kings, it’s a pilgrimage site and UNESCO World Heritage (1996). A huge medieval façade sketch survived, so 19th‑century builders followed the original Gothic plan. It survived multiple WWII bomb hits, and a 2007 Gerhard Richter window adds pixel‑style color.
Best months: May–October for stable weather; December for Christmas markets. It sits beside Köln Hbf. From Cologne Bonn Airport, S19/S13 reach Hbf in ~15 minutes; ICE links Frankfurt Airport in about an hour.
