Every year, the East Coast of Australia turns into a kind of marine highway, with thousands of humpback whales making their way between Antarctica and the tropics. But every so often, someone spots Migaloo—a white humpback and one of only a handful of known albino whales. Ever wondered how rare it is to see an all-white whale in the wild?

Migaloo’s migration route stretches from the chilly waters near Tasmania up to Queensland, covering over 2,500 kilometers. Scientists track him using unique markings and even his whale song, which is slightly different from the rest. His name means “white fella” in some Indigenous Australian languages.

The best time to catch a glimpse is between June and November, when the whales head north to breed and then return south. Most people watch from headlands or join boat tours out of places like Byron Bay or Hervey Bay—both easy to reach from Brisbane by car or train.
