Tucked along British Columbia’s coast, the Great Bear Rainforest is one of the largest temperate rainforests left on the planet. Ever heard of a bear that’s not quite black or white? The spirit bear, or Kermode bear, lives here—about one in ten black bears in this region has a rare gene that gives them creamy fur.

This place isn’t just about rare bears. The rainforest is home to ancient cedars, salmon runs that support entire ecosystems, and some of the cleanest air in North America. Indigenous communities have lived here for thousands of years, shaping and protecting the land long before it was a hashtag.

Best time to visit? Late August to early October, when salmon are running and wildlife is most active. Most travelers start in Vancouver, then take a flight or ferry to towns like Bella Bella or Prince Rupert, where guided tours into the rainforest begin.
