New Journal in Teacher Education: Second Language Teacher Education

Teacher Educator Interest Section (TEIS) of TESOL International Association will hold a webinar to introduce a new journal in teacher education, Second Language Teacher Education (Equinox Publishing).

Thomas S. C. Farrell (Brock University, Canada) and Zia Tajeddin (Tarbiat Modares University, Iran), the journal's editors, will discuss the journal and its focus and introduce the first issue. There will be a Q+A for attendees to ask questions of the editors.

A MESSAGE FROM PROFESSOR KATHI BAILEY

Dear RiLE colleagues

I am writing to ask for your help in publicizing an interesting conference opportunity that will happen quite soon – on Feb. 5, 11, and 12. The event will be hosted entirely online, in hopes that people all over the world can attend.

The conference is the Symposium on World Language Education (SOWLE), which is hosted by my school – the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). This year’s conference theme is “Promoting Equity and Leadership in the Language Classroom.”

The conference sessions are scheduled for 3 PM to 8:30 PM on Saturday, Feb. 5, 10 AM to noon on Friday, Feb. 11, and 8 AM to 1:30 PM on Saturday, Feb. 12. (All times are given in Pacific Standard Time.)

The opening keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Andy Curtis on Saturday, Feb. 5. His topic is “The New Peace Linguistics and the Role of Language in Context.”

The closing keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Shondel Nero on Saturday, Feb. 12. The title of her talk is “Decolonizing World Language Education in the 21st Century.”

On Friday, Feb. 11, there will be a panel presentation entitled “Ecology in Language Learning: Identifying Equitable Opportunities.” The panelists are Dr. Steve Thorne, Dr. Julie Sykes, Dr. Dongping Zheng, and Dr. Glenn Levine. The panel has been planned, in part, to honor the memory of Dr. Leo van Lier, a professor at MIIS who influenced language teaching and applied linguistics research.

Dear TELLSI
Members

We are delighted to announce that TELLSI plans to hold its 18th international conference on December 7-9, 2021 (Azar 16-18, 1400). The last TELLSI conference was held two years ago, in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic, afflicting applied linguistics conferences internationally, affected the TELLSI annual conference and hence TELLSI SIGs held webinars in place of an all-inclusive international conference in 2020. In light of the positive feedback we received from the SIG webinars, TELLSI Board of Directors has decided to hold 18th International TELLSI Conference online, hosted jointly by Tarbiat Modares University and Islamic Azad University, West Tehran Branch.

Aligned with recent developments in applied linguistics and the global demand for EIL-informed teacher education and language pedagogy, the theme of this year’s TELLSI conference is:

Enacting English as an International Language (EIL)
in Teacher Education and Language Instruction

There are many innovations in the 2021 TELLSI conference as keynote speeches, the main discussion panel, workshops, and the selection of exemplary researchers are all aligned with the theme of the conference. These keynote speeches, workshops, and panels could create spaces for researchers to heighten their interest in EIL-based research on teacher education and language instruction and for language instructors to bridge the gap between EIL pedagogical principles and classroom practices. We are confident that speeches by renowned keynote speakers alongside workshops, panels, and parallel session presentations will make this conference a memorable event for all attendees.

More details about abstract submission, scientific committee members selected both internationally and on a nationwide basis, and the wide range of conference topics will be announced shortly. Make sure to plan for a three-day attendance at the conference.
