The average 1940s American was racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, and anti-Communist.
The notion that "anti-fascism" or any contemporary left-wing value inspired the average American soldier to fight in WW2 is absurd. Many of those sent to Europe wondered why they weren't in the Pacific fighting the Japanese, who they regarded as racial enemies.
