state of prediction markets
prediction markets went from $0 to $3.9B weekly volume
i've watched:
- @Polymarket dominate 82% market share
- @Kalshi raise $1B at $11B valuation
- @RobinhoodApp do 3B event contracts in november (+20% MoM)
here are very obvious tailwinds for mainstream adoption of prediction markets:
- CFTC clarity unlocked US operations
- polymarket acquired QCX derivatives exchange july 2025
- kalshi partnering CNN CNBC for live probability tickers
- ICE investing $2B becoming global data distributor
what I'm tracking beyond politics:
1) polymarket open interest breakdown:
- non-election politics $55M
- crypto $52M
- business $36M
- elections $22M (not even top category anymore)
- pop culture $20M
- sports $20M
2) @opinionlabsxyz surged TVL +110% in 30 days ($30M to $63M).
estimated $4B monthly volume. they are challenging polymarket's dominance on emerging L2s
3) i see verticalization coming. sports-focused @Novig. entertainment @cryptocom + hollywood partnership. @trylimitless for short term crypto/stocks. one-size-fits-all platforms won't capture specialized markets
4) my thesis for prediction markets as we tokenzie uncertainty and it becomes a tradable asset class
5) prediction markets arent used for betting, they're probably the best hedging instruments. real-time probabilities outperformed polling in 2024-2025 elections by massive margins. market becoming truth discovery mechanism
6) institutional use cases emerging:
- defi protocols using prediction probabilities as oracle inputs
- tokenized positions enabling leverage
- portfolio hedging strategies
7) watching regulatory battles closely
- nevada judge ruled kalshi is gaming platform and not financial exchange.
- kalshi appealing says they're federally regulated using derivative contracts not bets.
- massachusetts similar case
- outcome determines if prediction markets scale nationally or stay fragmented state-by-state
8) risks:
- whale manipulation on low-liquidity markets
- wash trading in decentralized settings
- regulatory crackdowns limiting scope
- user fatigue if accuracy doesn't improve vs traditional methods
9) but momentum is undeniable
- 12 organizations applied for DCM status 2025 (500% increase YoY)
- everyone wants piece of this market
10) forward catalysts I see:
- CFTC-approved launches via established brokerages
- social platform APIs (embedded prediction in tweets)
- neobank integration blending finance and speculation
11) next 1-3 years:
- privacy-focused markets using ZK proofs i.e. @monero @Zcash took off
- futarchy for governance i.e. @MetaDAOProject opened doors
- crowd intelligence for resource allocation
the question isn't if prediction markets scale, it's which model captures multi-trillion dollar opportunity of pricing real-world uncertainty onchain
i'm positioned for verticalization thesis. specialized platforms beat generalists as market matures
polymarket proved the pmf. now execution and distribution determine winners
information wants to be priced. prediction markets are infrastructure for that
locking in early
