The BJP-led NDA dominated Silchar’s first municipal corporation election, winning 34 of the 42 seats in the newly formed civic body.
Taking aim at Congress after the results, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the party’s poor performance cannot be blamed on EVMs, pointing out that the Silchar polls were conducted entirely through paper ballots.
Voting for 40 wards was held on October 3, while two BJP candidates were elected unopposed. Counting began on Tuesday morning.
