The Indonesian government has submitted the List of Problem Inventories (DIM) for the revision of the TNI Law to the Parliament (DPR) on March 11, 2025. This revision contains highly problematic articles that could
revive military dual function (Dwifungsi TNI) and militarism in Indonesia. This move threatens the professionalism of our military, dragging TNI back into non-defense roles that should be reserved for civilians. TNI is trained and prepared for defense and warfare, not for taking over civilian positions in institutions like the Attorney Generalβs Office or the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. This is a clear violation of democratic principles and a dangerous return to the dark era of military dominance in civil affairs. Even more alarming, the revision allows military operations beyond war (OMSP) without DPR approval, stripping away civilian control and oversight, a fundamental pillar of democracy.
We must act now. The future of our democracy is at stake. TNI should remain a professional defense force, not a political tool. Letβs protect our democracy, uphold human rights, and ensure a professional military force dedicated solely to defending our nation, not running it.
