In a major boost for Pakistan’s maritime and industrial future, the government has green-lit a landmark partnership with China to develop a state-of-the-art shipbuilding and repair complex at Port Qasim, Karachi.

The facility — part of an integrated “Maritime Industrial Zone” — will position Pakistan as a regional hub for ship construction, maintenance, and recycling, with plans to build up to six vessels annually under advanced Pakistan/Chinese technology and technical collaboration.

Notably, the financial framework allows Pakistan to make payments in Pakistani rupees, easing pressure on foreign reserves and supporting local industrial participation.

The project will create thousands of jobs, strengthen national shipbuilding capabilities, and enhance strategic self-reliance in the blue economy — marking one of the most significant milestones in Pakistan-China industrial cooperation.
