☦ We live in a vale of tears; that's why we have to spend our time sometimes jumping, and sometimes crying. Let's at least console ourselves with the thought that this deplorable vale is temporary. Everything will rush by, everything will flash by like a shadow, like an echo, and eternity will come, constant, unchangeable, endless and oh, so that it may be blissful and bright for us! Let us hope that the Lord, in His infinite mercy, will not deprive us of this mercy.
🪔 If you see a sinner, do not disclose his sin, do not condemn him, do not hate him, so that you do not fall into the same sin, but rather say: "I am worse than him, and today he sinned, and the next morning I will sin."
☦ Those who sin greatly and go unpunished ought to fear and consider themselves debtors, for they are increasing their own punishment due to the deferral of retribution and God’s long-suffering.
N.87 An elder used to say: “I often saw the Holy Spirit at the mouths of the brothers when the deacon said "Greet each other ..."
N.88 There was once a person who repented and lived in hêsychia. Almost immediately he chanced to stumble on a stone and to be stricken in his foot, so that he lost a great deal of blood and, fainting away, gave up his soul. The demons came wanting to take his soul, but the angels said to them: “Look at the stone and see the blood he shed for the Lord” and, when the angels said this, his soul was set free.
029. March 8/21, 1970 St. Theophylakt Your Grace [Bishop Theodosius of Alaska]: We thank you for your kind response to our letter, sent through Father David Black. We were especially touched by the icons of St. Theodosius, for whom we have a deep devotion. In looking through the Life of St. Theodosius written by our own Archbishop Anthony of San Francisco, which we hope to translate and print in a future issue of The Orthodox Word, we found the following note made by Archbishop Anthony, which we would like to share with you. “A tiny part of the relics of St. Theodosius came as a wondrous blessing abroad to our Brotherhood of St. Job of Pochaev and was placed in an icon on the Saint painted by Archimandrite Cyprian. This icon was given as a gift and blessing from His Eminence Metropolitan Anastassy to the Sobor of the American Metropolia, being designated for the city of Cleveland for the cathedral church of St. Theodosius. The fatal decrees of the Sobor then separated us. May this icon be a pledge of the future reunion desired by all”. By the prayers of St. Theodosius and Blessed Father Herman, may this reunion be accomplished in those who truly desire it! With all respect and love in Christ our Saviour, Reader Eugene Rose Reader Gleb Podmoshensky P.s. May we have Your Grace’s permission to use the icon you sent us as an illustration for our Life of St. Theodosius? If so, could you send us another copy from which to make the reproduction? If you have any other illustrations appropriate to the Life, we would very much appreciate the opportunity to use them. We have seen, but cannot now obtain, a photograph of the faithful holding the relics of St. Theodosius after the Soviet sattempted to desecrate them.
98 A mournful soul approaches Thee, O Holy Master, and with tears she falls down before Thy compassion. Thou hast sworn by Thine Own Self that Thou desirest not the death of a sinner and would rather save him from his sins. And truly Thy goodness daily doth prevail over the errors of men. Thou hast mercy upon sinners just as Thou hast mercy upon those who walk in Thy commandments. Thy compassion is everywhere declared in the Gospels and in the writings of the apostles. Thy holy fathers and teachers, both those who are named in the Church and those who are not, declare Thy compassion. I know of the prodigal son, Manasseh, the thief, Zacchaeus, the publican, the harlot, the Canaanite woman, the woman with an issue of blood, the paralytic, the blind man, Jairus, and all whose stories have been written down--and I approach Thee. Extend thy charity and accept me; quicken my mind and restrain me who often fall into my former iniquities and am mired in corrupt thoughts. When thy grace comes to my heart she finds there the stench of corrupting thoughts. Therefore she instantly withdraws without finding an entrance or having an opportunity to enter and dwell in me as she would like. Wash my heart with radiant bliss, that I might come to my senses and that Thy grace might make her dwelling in me, O all-compassionate Lord!
🪔 With the transfer of ancestral sinfulness to all the descendants of Adam through birth, all the consequences that befell our first parents after the fall are transferred to them at the same time; the disfigurement of the image of God, the darkening of the mind, the corruption of the will, the defilement of the heart, diseases, suffering and death.
🕯☦🕯 A Christian should be polite to everyone. His words and deeds must breathe the grace of the Holy Spirit, which dwells in his soul, so that his Christian life may be witnessed and the name of God may be glorified.
214. When the evil conduct of one person begins to affect others, you should not show long-suffering; and instead of your own advantage you should seek that of the others, so that they may be saved. For virtue involving many people is more valuable than virtue involving only one.
215. If a man falls into some sin and does not feel remorse for his offence as he should, he will easily fall into the same net again.
216. Just as a lioness does not make friends with a calf, so impudence does not gladly admit the remorse that accords with God's will.
☦ Faith is the inner trust of a believer in someone in whom he believes; in other words, faith is the believer's inquisitive conviction about the object of faith, surpassing proof.
🪔 The opportunities to help people simply by conversing with them are virtually limitless. One who knows how to speak with conviction—who knows how to speak the language of love—can inspire others to perform good and beautiful deeds, comfort the grieving, encourage the disheartened, and enlighten the inexperienced; in a thousand ways, such a person can help their neighbor.
🕯🕯🕯☦🕯🕯🕯 Nowadays, the people of this age look upon us believers as fools—as simpletons. They dislike our Orthodox faith, our church statutes, rules, and rites. They scornfully mock everything we hold sacred. I often hear from believers forced to live in a hostile world how hard it is for them to endure constant ridicule and mockery. Yet, to my mind, we should consider such treatment an honor. "If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you" (1 Peter 4:14). If we are laughed at, if we are disliked, it means we are not of this world. We should not be distressed or troubled by such treatment.
N.86 A monk was working on a day when a martyr was being commemorated. Another monk saw him and said: “Is it possible that you are working today?” He said to him: “On this day the servant of God was tortured bearing witness [to his faith] and was beaten; ought not I too to make a little effort at work today?”
🕯☦🕯 Do not tell me that such a one is a fugitive, a robber, a thief, and full of innumerable evils, or that he is poor, and rejected, and of little value, and unworthy of any word, but think that Christ died for him, and this will be a sufficient reason for you to take every possible care of him.
persecutors of the faithful); if His Grace has the courage to stand up and be numbered with the confessors of Orthodoxy, we will offer every support possible for Orthodoxy in Alaska and encourage our readers to do the same. How our hearts long to receive you all as full brothers in that small flock of Orthodox faithful which now seems about to face the hatred not only of the world but of those “Orthodox” who do not care enough for their faith. May God and Father Herman and the holy New Martyr Peter guide aright His Grace and all of you in Alaska. We are praying for you and ask your prayers for us.With love in Christ our Saviour, Eugene Rose P.s. Br. Gleb sends his greetings. Enclosed is our just-printed icon of Father Herman. Separately you will receive (in case you don’t have it already) F. Golder’s life of Father Herman. Both are gifts from us.
