Massive Central Bank loan sparks currency drop, fuel shortages

October 15, 2026

The kyat's value has dropped further and fuel shortages have hit Yangon after the regime’s rubber-stamp parliament on Wednesday approved a massive loan of 2.1 trillion kyats from the Central Bank to bridge the budget deficit.

Some filling stations in the city said they had run out of fuel. While official prices set by the regime this week vary between 4,600 and 5,600 kyats for octane and diesel depending on quality, market prices have already climbed above 6,000 kyats per liter.

Recently, the cash-strapped regime further restricted fuel imports to reduce dollar expenditures. The exchange rate has climbed from around 4,400 to more than 4,600 kyat per dollar this week, driving concerns that prices may increase further. Myanmar imports more than 95 percent of its fuel.
