In the Old Testament, God (who is the Demiurge in Gnostic thought) says:
‘And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it.’ Exodus 20:25
Masonry is quite literally the art of cutting stone, with which to build things. With this verse as the cypher, “cutting stone” is a metaphor for purposeful opposition against (God) the Demiurge.
So “Freemasons” in occult practice are “The Liberated Defilers of the Demiurge”
In addition, the altar in a Masonic Lodge is often the center of activity; a cut stone altar as a continual reminder of their purpose, for those in the know.
