Syrian government officials and Hezbollah representatives held a secret face-to-face meeting in Turkey last month in an effort to "calm tensions" between the two sides, Reuters reported, citing six sources briefed on the talks.
The meeting, the first known direct encounter between them, brought together Hezbollah representatives and Syrian intelligence and Foreign Ministry officials at the invitation of Turkish security and intelligence agencies, the six sources told Reuters.
According to the sources, the talks focused on "mutual security concerns" and resolving points of tension, with one Lebanese source saying the two sides "made a lot of progress on security issues."
Syria reportedly assured Hezbollah it would not intervene militarily in Lebanon to disarm the group, while discussions also covered "cross-border smuggling" and alleged Hezbollah cells in southern Syria.
No final agreement was reached, and Reuters said the two sides did not plan to announce the meeting publicly.
