In 1938, museum director Wilhelm König pulled an odd artifact from storage in Baghdad — a clay jar containing a copper cylinder and an iron rod, sealed with asphalt.

Then came the strange part.

When filled with an acidic liquid, the arrangement could produce a small electrical current — essentially a primitive galvanic cell.

Copper, iron and acid are enough to generate electricity. But there was one enormous problem:

The jar was nearly 2,000 years old.

That meant someone had built something resembling a battery long before Alessandro Volta introduced his famous battery in 1800.

König proposed an even stranger possibility: perhaps it had been used for electroplating — using electricity to coat metal with gold.

Skeptics weren't convinced. No wires were found nearby, and no electroplated objects could prove the theory.

Some researchers suggested the jar was simply a container for a scroll.

But that leaves an uncomfortable question:

If it was only a container… what was that strange residue doing inside?
