☕️Many thanks for the comments to the previous post - I guess from now on we can safely refer to beer as ‘Irish water’, it IS hilarious, innit?:)
Here are my personal favourites:
🇸🇪 Sweden - ‘the flat-pack white’
(1) ‘flat white’ is, indeed, a coffee (creamy steamed milk is poured over a double shot of espresso);
(2) flat-pack furniture = Ikea
🇳🇿 New Zealand - ‘the all-black coffee’
Had it not been for our only male student who is very well-versed in sports, it wouldn’t even occur to us that it’s the reference to a NZ rugby team called ‘All Blacks’
🇫🇷 ‘a French coffee which is served in a smug.’ - ‘Don’t you mean ‘a mug’?’ - ‘Non’’
Mug = a large cup; smug = a facial expression of superiority and arrogance 😤 that the French are frequently accused of:)
🇪🇸 Spain - ‘that’s a caffe (1) olé-olé’ or (2) ‘cafe au lait’ = coffee with milk
🇻🇪 Venezuela - ‘I’m afraid we can’t serve that - it’s just reached boiling point’ - this video is 6 years old, which makes a reference to 2017 Venezuelan anti-Maduro protests very relevant.
🇮🇳 Indian coffee - ‘that could be arranged’ - this one is tricky, as there are two possible interpretations:
(1) ‘that could be arranged’ is a stereotypical way of saying ‘ok, deal’; like nothing is impossible for an Indian entrepreneur;
(2) this might be a reference to a rather large number of arranged marriages in India
Anyway - it is amazing how much can be inferred from just a 90-second long video, innit?:) Do you agree with my interpretations? Btw, what other coffee/country would you have included in the sketch?
