🚨 Mexico: Senate Approves Constitutional Amendment on Candidates’ Dual Citizenship by Qualified Majority

🏛️ The Mexican Senate approved, with 86 votes, the constitutional amendment that requires anyone running for president, governor, or head of government of Mexico City to hold exclusively Mexican citizenship and renounce any other.

🗳️ Morena and its allies secured a narrow qualified majority, with 128 senators present, and called on alternate senators to take their places. Octavia Hernández Farret took the place of Senator Karina Ruiz, who is currently in Arizona and was unable to leave the state. Senate President Higinio Martínez Miranda forwarded the bill to the state legislatures.

⚖️ The entire opposition voted against the measure, along with PVEM (Green Ecologist Party of Mexico) Senator Luis Armando Melgar. The amendment modifies Articles 82, 116, and 122 of the Constitution.
