🎮 Microsoft is preparing to end Xbox disc production, following Sony's lead. The company is quietly developing a "Disc2Digital" feature to convert physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games into digital licenses. Tests are currently underway. This feature will not support Xbox 360 or original Xbox titles.
1) Conversion Process
Users insert a compatible disc, install, and launch the game. The digital license attaches to their Microsoft account. If the physical disc is sold or lent, the license transfers to the new owner upon launch.
2) Compatibility
Digital versions function like Microsoft Store purchases. Xbox Play Anywhere titles will be available on PC and handhelds. Game Pass subscribers can access copies via Xbox Cloud Gaming. Multi-disc editions and console bundles retain all bonus content. Note that some older Xbox One discs may not be supported depending on manufacturing date.
Microsoft has not yet decided if the next generation console, codenamed Project Helix, will include a disc drive.
