Tangut refers to an ancient people who lived in what is now northwestern China. They are best known for establishing the Western Xia dynasty (also known as the Xi Xia) in the 11th century. The Tangut had their own language and script, known as the Tangut script, which is considered unique and complex.
This civilization played a significant role in Central Asian history before being conquered by the Mongol Empire. Despite their influence, much about the Tangut culture remains relatively obscure.
