The preliminary concept would involve Department of Energy specialists, supported by U.S. troops, Special Operations forces, and other agencies, locating, securing, and transporting Iran’s nuclear materials.

One scenario under review includes positioning American forces across the Middle East to support a rapid deployment, potentially involving the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) and the Army’s 20th CBRNE Command.

U.S. officials emphasized that no mission has been approved and that the discussions remain part of routine contingency planning dependent on diplomatic and battlefield developments.
