📰 You, too, can turn your spare Raspberry Pi 5 into a Proxmox virtualization host

It's always good to find a new way to put your unused hardware to use, and turning one into a Proxmox virtualisation host is definitely one of the more useful ways. If you have a Raspberry Pi 5 that isn't earning its rent, someone on Reddit has devised a way to turn it into a handy Proxmox tool, although it comes with a handful of downsides.

BragJack lets malicious extensions take over AI browser agents

BragJack shows how one malicious browser extension can seize control of AI browser agents across Chrome, Edge, Opera Neon, Perplexity Comet, and Claude in Chrome. The proof of concept earned more than $20,000 in bug bounties and led to two CVEs; once the extension is installed, the takeover can proceed without further user interaction.

📰 KDE Plasma 6.8 goes into maintenance mode as an October release seems highly likely

Well, it's almost time. The good folks over at KDE are dotting the i's and crossing the t's as they're getting ready for the big Plasma 6.8 launch. The bad news is, the developers don't often have time to code fully fleshed-out features, so we're in bug-fixing mode right now. The good news is...well, we're getting KDE Plasma 6.8 on October 14th, which is a huge plus. Regardless, the KDE community has published patch notes detailing all the fixes...

📰 Public Exploits Released for Four Linux Kernel Flaws That Enable Local Root

A security researcher has released working exploit code for four Linux kernel flaws that each let a local user gain root, the highest level of access on a machine.Kernel maintainers have fixed all four over the past few weeks, so a system running an up-to-date kernel is not affected. But the exploit code is now public, and any machine still running an older kernel should be updated. The flaws.

📰 Google's "Painful To Maintain" Binder C Linux Driver Being Removed In Favor Of Rust

Google's Binder driver written in the C programming language has long been part of the mainline kernel as the inter-process communication (IPC) mechanism used on Android. The past few years the Binder driver was rewritten in Rust as one of the first "real" drivers in the Rust programming language. The Rust Binder driver was upstreamed in Linux 6.18 and now for the upcoming Linux 7.

Convey is a GTK4/libadwaita fork of Linux email app Geary

Convey is a new Linux email client based on the code of Geary, remade with a GTK4/libadwaita UI and support for Microsoft 365 accounts. Somewhat like traditional mail, it arrives not long after I wrote about another new Linux email client, Postcard, which also draws its inspiration from Geary – the source being much-loved by Linux users, but whose last stable release was in 2024. Convey is a self-described hard fork of Geary so, unlike Postcard, it isn’t a tribute so much as a continuation – albeit an unofficial one: the Flathub listing is clear that it is “not affiliated with […]
