LightDM returns from the dark with first release in 4 years

LightDM, Ubuntu’s former display manager, has had its first new release in four years – the first under new maintainers. LightDM v1.33.0 is a ‘catch up’ release that adds Qt6 support (Qt5 still works) and clears a backlog of fixes that had built up since the previous release. There shouldn’t be any breaking changes either, per the release notes. LightDM is a backend that handles logging in to user sessions. A GUI ‘greeter’ sits on top for user interaction. Ubuntu used the unity-greeter, but other distros and desktops roll their own. Linux Mint switched to LightDM in 2017 with slick-greeter […]

QEMU 11.1

Your first shortened TLS certificates expire in September

Public TLS validity dropped from 398 days to 200 days on March 15, 2026, the first of three cuts on the way to 47 days in March 2029. Most CAs moved early, so certificates issued from late February onward begin expiring in September and through October. By 2029 that works out to roughly eight renewals per certificate per year.

Mark Zuckerberg’s AI-for-everyone vision runs into a compute problem

Matthew Berman supports Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of widely available superintelligence, open-source AI, and AI-driven invention—but identifies a major weakness: equal access to models does not mean equal access to intelligence. Unfortunately, at the end of the podcast, Berman projects his own U.S. tribalistic views onto Zuck.

The next version of GNOME Shell, out in September, is likely to include a redesigned search experience.
