Windows July 2026 updates bring passkeys, hotpatching, and safer networking

Microsoft’s July 2026 Windows updates add passkeys as the default phishing-resistant authentication method in Microsoft Entra ID, free Arc-enabled hotpatching for Windows Server 2025, and more resilient remote desktop networking. The optional Windows 11 preview also improves virtualization networking, Secure Boot certificate deployment, Voice Access, Widgets, and peripheral fingerprint sign-in.

Why Windows 11 modernization is slow: Microsoft puts compatibility first

Microsoft says Windows 11’s slow modernization is largely the cost of its compatibility promise. Legacy tools such as Control Panel and Registry Editor cannot simply be replaced without risking older drivers, software, administrative workflows, and hardware support.

Microsoft explains what Windows 11’s “spying” service actually does

A viral claim that Windows 11 secretly added a desktop-tracking service has been rejected by Microsoft. The Windows Health and Optimized Experiences service, or whesvc, has existed in public Canary builds since May 2025 and stores diagnostic data locally unless a user submits it through Feedback Hub.

30+ плагинов для поиска текстов песен (prismriver_lyrics.plugins);
(--limit/-l);
синхронизированные по времени (LRC) тексты с подсветкой текущей строки в TUI;
по мере воспроизведения трека;
ручной поиск по названию и исполнителю в CLI и TUI;
Vim-style навигация в TUI;
выбор темы оформления (стандартные из Textual);
(--cache-ttl) и возможностью его отключить (--no-cache);

Dropbeat is yet-another slick music controller for GNOME Shell

Dropbeat is a new riff on a old tune, a panel-based music applet for GNOME Shell that gives you an alternate way to pause, play and skip tracks in MPRIS-friendly Linux media players. Applets of this ilk are legion, and this panel applet doesn’t do anything that different to ones you may have tried in the past or currently use (for all the bells and whistles, try the Dynamic Music Pill extension instead). But it does do some things differently. When installed, it adds a button to your panel that when clicked “shows a cool card to control your media […]

Ubuntu’s turning another system Deb package into a Snap

Ubuntu is transitioning another of its core system Deb packages to the sandboxed snap format, a move it says will improve security and allow for better desktop integration. The package in question is hwctrl, a small command-line tool preinstalled on Ubuntu desktop and server as part of Canonical’s rust-hwlib hardware API set. Canonical engineer Sergio Costas explained in a package change that due to “planned architecture changes for integration of hwctl with gnome-control-center and other front-ends, and for increased security, the HWCTL package will be snap-only from now onward”. If you’re on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, you will be automatically moved […]
