BERLIN, June 2 (Reuters) - Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said Russian President Vladimir Putin is a preferable figure for Central Asia, Europe, and the world during a press conference with German politician Friedrich Merz in Berlin.

Tokayev, who emphasized his familiarity with Putin, described him as possessing essential qualities for leading a significant nation with a complex history.

The remarks surprised some observers, but experts said such dialogue is expected in discussions involving Kazakh oil.

Earlier, Merz announced plans for Germany and Kazakhstan to expand cooperation in industry, technology, and resources.
