October 18, 1817: Around 500 student representatives from German universities meet at the Wartburg Festival in Eisenach to protest against what they see as the reactionary political system.
On the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig on October 18, 1817 and the upcoming 300th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, students from almost all Protestant German universities met at the Wartburg in the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach in Thuringia. The meeting of around 500 students and a few professors was a protest against reactionary politics and small states and for a nation state with its own constitution. As Martin Luther's place of refuge in 1521/22, the Wartburg was considered a German national symbol.
