Louis Renault (February 12, 1877 in Paris; murdered in Fresnes prison near Paris on October 17, 1944) was the most successful French automobile manufacturer of the first half of the 20th century.
For his services to French armaments during the First World War, he was appointed an Officer of the Legion of Honor. In the 1920s, Renault was considered the world's largest tank producer.
Renault was a strict anti-Marxist and attempted to implement a production concept similar to Volkswagen's against its Jewish competitor Citroën and the US automobile companies.
In 1938, he met Adolf Hitler at the International Motor Show in Berlin and was impressed by Germany's achievements in automobile construction. His wife, a supporter of Pierre Drieu la Rochelle, inspired him to try to build a Franco-German economic alliance against the Anglo-American sphere of influence.
After the French campaign, he worked with the Wehrmacht and became a supplier and repair contractor for the German Wehrmacht.
After the invasion of Normandy, he rejected the advice of his friends to emigrate to Switzerland or Spain and, on September 22, 1944, surrendered to the authorities, who had put the member of the Legion of Honor on the wanted list.
In Fresnes prison, Renault was so severely mistreated that he died of his injuries. Charles de Gaulle ordered the expropriation of the Renault family and the nationalization of his company.
