1st Lieutenant Jorma Kalevi Sarvanto (22 August 1912 – 16 October 1963) of the Finnish Air Force sits in the cockpit of his Messerschmitt Bf-109G-2, ready for another mission with the 2nd Flight of the 24th Fighter Squadron. A skilled and fearless pilot, Saarinen flew 139 combat sorties—claiming 5 aerial victories in the rugged Brewster 239 and 18 more in the sleek Bf-109. Flying against Soviet aircraft on the Eastern Front, he took part in the brutal air war over Karelia and the Gulf of Finland during the Continuation War.
He accumulated a total of 17 confirmed kills during World War II, with four additional victories scored during the Continuation War while flying Brewster Buffalo fighters.
He served from 1937 to 1960, flying a total of 255 combat missions and utilizing the Fokker D.XXI and Brewster B-239 aircraft.
