|🩺| — 🔠y unknown reader,
I reflect on the nature of the healing art. We, doctors, hold in our hands a delicate balance between science and compassion. On one side — knowledge accumulated over centuries: the works of Hippocrates, Galen, modern discoveries. On the other — living concern, the ability to listen, to encourage. Sometimes a kind word heals as well as a potion.
I have also thought on the limits of our abilities. No matter how many books one reads, how many experiments one performs — nature remains a mystery. Today I saw an old woman struggling for every breath with lung inflammation, and nearby — a healthy youth laughing and jesting. Where is the pattern? It is not for us to judge. Our task is to help where we can, and not lose heart when we cannot.
