I am not accustomed to lay bare my soul before the public — my words are usually brief, and my deeds speak for themselves. But now I shall permit myself a departure from this rule: the matter at hand concerns my household and the two children I took under my wing when they were scarcely more than infants.

The boy, Thomas, I found upon the hospital steps in bitter frost three years ago. The girl, Amelie, I rescued half a year later in the slums by the docks — she could barely stand from hunger and fever. Both were too young to remember their kin, and too weak to survive without aid.

Since then, I have taken upon myself the duty to heal not only bodies, but souls.
